2024년도 9월에 개최되는 북미 빅토리아 학회 학술대회에 대해 다음과 같이 안내해 드립니다. 관심있으신 회원 분들 많은 참여를 부탁드리겠습니다.

오늘날 직면한 기후 위기를 고려하여, NAVSA (North American Victorian Studies Association: 북미빅토리아학회)는 항공편 없는 학술대회를 개최하게 되었습니다. 항공편 없는 학술대회란 탄소 배출을 줄이고 자원을 절약하면서도 북미권 밖의 많은 학자들이 소통할 수 있도록 하기 위해 전 세계 여러 지역(허브)에서 개최하게 되는 멀티-허브 형식의 학회입니다.

내년에 한국(서울)이 아시아 지역의 유일한 허브로 NAVSA 2024에 참여하게 되었습니다.

일정: 2024년 9월 27일~28일 (금~토) 

장소: 연세대학교 신촌 캠퍼스

참가비: $50 (예정)

NAVSA 2024 서울 준비위원회는 국내 빅토리아조 문학 연구자들이 모일 수 있는 풍성한 학술 발표의 장을 마련하고자 합니다. 대면 소통의 장점을 살리면서도 국내 학자들이 국제 학술대회에 참여할 때 겪었던 어려움(숙박비, 장거리 비행, 동시에 진행되는 빡빡한 일정)을 해소할 수 있다는 점이 이번 멀티-허브 국제 학술대회의 장점입니다. 

발표문 프로포절 제출 마감일은 2023년 10월 12일이오니, 근대영미소설학회 회원님들의 적극적인 관심과 참여를 독려하고자 합니다. 한국 허브는 15분짜리 개인 발표, 패널, 라운드테이블 형식의 다양한 프로포절을 받을 예정입니다.

(*선택사항 중 개인 발표가 아닌, 패널을 원하시는 분들은 “패널” 선택하신 후, 각자의 발표 프로포절을 개인이 직접 올려주시고 프로포절에 패널 소속만 밝혀주시면 되겠습니다. 개인 프로포절은 저희가 주제에 따라 패널로 직접 구성할 예정입니다.)

이번 학회는 18-19세기 (문학) 연구 전반에 걸쳐 “사건”(event)에 대한 광범위한 해석을 도모하고자 합니다. 다음과 같은 주제에 대해 회원 여러분들의 다양한 고민과 관심을 환영합니다:

        - 환경 재난과 위기 담론: 기후 변화, 환경 문제, 판데믹, 질병, 인구 위기, 페미니즘 위기, 인문학 위기 등

        - 교육 환경의 변화와 새로운 방법론: 테크놀로지, 빅테이터, 디지털인문학, AI, 뉴미디어, 의료인문학, 장애학, 사물/동물이론 등

        - 시간성과 시대 인식: 역사성, 지속성, 연대기, 혁명, 전쟁, 제국, 민족, 민족주의, 세계화, 탈세계화 등

        - 사건으로서의 서사와 시학: 플롯, 형식, 빌둥, 변화, 메타픽션 등을 통해 포착한 환경 변화 및 사건

또한 NAVSA 2024 본부는 일 년 동안 다양한 온라인 행사를 진행할 예정입니다. 월간 Zoom 이벤트(아래 링크 참조)와 시차에 영향을 받지 않는 COVE 스튜디오 (디지털 교육 프로젝트)도 계획하고 있습니다. 자세한 일정은 https://www.event2024.org/에서 확인하실 수 있습니다.

기후위기 시대의 새로운 모델을 제시하는 이번 국제 학술대회에 많은 선생님들의 참여와 관심을 부탁드립니다.

Turning to the century in which the environmental crises we face were being set in motion, scholars at NAVSA (North American Victorian Studies Association) have come together from across the globe to address what this means for us now. Part of our answer to that question was to model a flightless, multi-venue form of conference that would reduce emissions, save resources, and involve more people by lowering barriers of travel and funding. 

Out of 17 hubs across the world,  Seoul, South Korea has committed to be the only hub in Asia, hosting this flightless international conference in September 2024 at Yonsei University. Indeed, the potential to reduce emissions and expenses (hotels, long-haul flights, overburdened schedules with multiple concurrent panels) while preserving face-to-face connection most attracted people to join this multi-hub conferencing. NAVSA 2024 will facilitate international networking through other means including monthly Zoom events throughout the year (please refer to the event link below) and COVE studio which is not dependent on time zones. We are thrilled to be a part of developing this new model for the academic community and would like to ask you to join in this exciting project. 

We invite work that engages with the wide-reaching interpretation of “event” across the long-nineteenth century (literary) studies as a theme articulated in the main call of papers. The Korea hub welcomes proposals for 15-min papers, panels, and roundtables. Such engagements might include (but not limited to): 

- Crisis and Disaster: climate change, the pandemic, diseases, population crisis, feminism, humanities, etc. 

        - Change in Education and Pedagogical Approaches: technology, big data, digital humanities, AI, new media, medical humanities, disability studies, animal studies, etc.

        - Temporality and Period: historicism, continuity, chronology, revolution, war, empire, nation, nationalism, globalization, deglobalization, etc. 

        - Narrative and Poetics: observation and analysis of environmental change and events seen through the plot, structure, Bildung, change, meta-fiction, etc.
